Tonantzin Dance Company is a Mexican folk dance company based in Green Bay. We are proud of our heritage, and wish to share it with our entire community.
The Company was established in 2006 with a mission that included instruction of primary and secondary school students as well as young adults in the art and culture of Mexican folk dance. Along with performances, the company provided classroom workshops on Mexican and pre-Mexican dance. Almost 200 members danced with the company, performing throughout Northeastern Wisconsin approximately 300 times. Locally, we have performed at UWGB, Art Street, the Weidner, the Meyer, the Neville, and the Titletown District. Outside our area, we have performed at the Shawano Folk Music Festival, and the Portage County Cultural Festival in Stevens Point. The group has become a fixture in the Celebración Virgen de Guadalupe at the parishes of St. Willebrord in Green Bay, and Corpus Christi in Sturgeon Bay.
The director and choreographer of Tonantzin is Rose Alcalá-Ament, a graduate of UCLA. It was there that she was introduced to Mexican folkloric dance, working with the Ballet Folklórico de UCLA. She danced on the West Coast with various companies for 30 years.
After twelve years, we have decided to take some time away from the everyday rigors of such a group. However, Ms. Alcalá-Ament continues to serve as a local salsa dance instructor, and plans to participate in local and regional performances and instructional workshops.
For further information, please contact Ms. Alcalá-Ament at info@TonantzinDanceCompany.com.
